Which Type of Breast Implant is Right for Me?

If you’re considering breast augmentation, you know this procedure can change the shape, positioning, size, or volume of your breasts. But did you know that selecting the right implant for your needs and goals is a critical part of the process?

Our practice uses advanced techniques and materials to give you natural-looking, lasting results—with your safety top of mind.

We’re dedicated to helping you make an informed decision about your breast implants, so we created this post explaining the different types of implants and why one might be better for you than another.

Understanding breast implants

Breast implants are prosthetic devices used to increase the size of your breasts. Women choose breast augmentation for different reasons, including:

Saline and silicone are the two primary types of implants. Both types are safe, FDA-approved, and designed to provide natural-looking results. Because each has unique benefits and considerations, keep reading to learn which is better for you.

All about saline implants

Saline implants are made with an outer silicone shell, which is then filled with saline (sterile salt water). They are inserted empty and filled once in place, which typically requires a smaller incision.

The advantages of saline implants include less visible scarring due to the smaller incisions, no health risks if they rupture, since saline can be safely absorbed by your body, and the ability for your surgeon to adjust the volume to suit your goals during surgery.

Some disadvantages of saline include a higher chance of “rippling” or wrinkling over time, feeling the water move in your breasts during physical activity (for non-baffled implants), and a less natural feel than silicone implants.

All about silicone implants

Silicone implants are comprised of a silicone shell and filled with a cohesive silicone gel. They are pre-filled and come in various shapes and sizes to closely mimic the feel and appearance of your natural breast tissue.

The benefits of silicone implants are a more natural look and feel, a lower risk of rippling or wrinkling, and a large selection of a variety of shapes and sizes from which to choose.

Some disadvantages of silicone implants include the need for a larger incision, and therefore scar, the need to come in for recommended regular screenings (every three to five years) to check for leaks, and the risk of a potential health concern if the implant ruptures.

Saline or silicone: factors to consider

When deciding between saline and silicone implants, consider the following factors:

Desired aesthetic

Silicone implants often provide a more natural look and feel, making them a popular choice for those seeking a subtler enhancement. Saline implants can be adjusted during surgery, offering flexibility in achieving the desired volume.

Health and safety

Both types of implants are safe, but silicone implants require more frequent monitoring to ensure they haven’t ruptured. Saline implants pose no health risks if they leak, as the body can safely absorb the saline solution.

Incision and recovery

Saline implants generally require a smaller incision since they are filled after being placed in the breast. Silicone implants, being pre-filled, necessitate a larger incision. Recovery time and care depends on the type of implant and the specifics of your surgery.
