What is the Obalon Balloon System?

The Obalon Balloon System involves the use of a gastric balloon to aid with weight loss. Gastric balloons work by taking up space in your stomach to help you feel full with less food.

The Obalon Balloon System is unique in that instead of having the balloons placed by a surgeon, you simply swallow them. Each balloon is folded into a capsule that you consume with a glass of water. Our team then takes an X-ray to ensure the right positioning. It takes about 10 minutes for the balloon to get in place, and most patients benefit from three balloons.

The balloons stay in your stomach for about six months, but if you decide to remove them early or after the recommended six-month period, the removal procedure only takes about 20 minutes to complete. You’ll be lightly sedated while we puncture and remove the balloons, and you’re free to go home immediately afterward.

Am I a candidate for the Obalon Balloon System?

Participants in the Obalon Clinical Study were able to keep off 89% of the weight lost at the one-year mark when combined with a healthy diet and exercise program. Not everyone is a candidate, however. Read on to learn the top four requirements for the Obalon Balloon System

1. Meet appropriate body mass index (BMI) requirements

To be a candidate for the Obalon Balloon System, your BMI should be 30-40. In other words, you should need to lose between 30 to 100 pounds.

2. Meet age and health requirements

Obalon Balloon recipients must be 22 or older and meet certain health requirements. For example, if you’re pregnant or will become pregnant while using the system, you aren’t a candidate. Other requirements include, but are not limited to the following:

Other contraindications may apply. Your doctor will review your family and medical history to ensure the Obalon Balloon System is right for you.

3. Meet altitude requirements

Since gastric balloons respond to barometric pressure, it’s important to follow altitude requirements carefully. If you’re planning to reside at an altitude higher than 4,000 ft. or lower than 2,500 ft. from where you live at the time of placement while you have the balloon in place, you may not be a candidate. Be sure to talk to your doctor at OasisMD if a move to a new altitude is in your near future.

4. Commitment to a healthy lifestyle

The Obalon Balloon System isn’t a long-term solution. All balloons must be removed six months after the first is placed. This system is designed to be used in conjunction with a healthy eating plan, behavior or habit changes, and regular physical activity. Candidates must be willing to commit to making these healthy lifestyle changes.
